After the Sunset
Directed
by: Brett Ratner
Starring: Pierce Brosnan, Salma Hayek, Woody Harrelson and Don Cheadle
The first thing that popped into my head when I heard about this movie was, “Wow, The Thomas Crown Affair II …kind of.” Amazingly enough I wasn’t far off with that sentiment. Now granted, Brosnan doesn’t play a millionaire playboy who steals expensive things just for the rush of stealing them and the film takes place mostly in the Bahamas as opposed to New York but the film still just has a Thomas Crown feeling that’s impossible to shake. Now don’t get me wrong, I liked both films, I like Brosnan and seriously, who doesn’t like Salma Hayek but I still couldn’t help but feel like I had seen this film before.
Basically, the story works out like this. Brosnan and Hayek are a criminal duo/lovers who specialize in stealing rare jewels and have stolen all but one of the Napoleon diamonds but who have decided to retire on a high note. They move to the Bahamas to live happily ever after and be nice quiet, boring people on an island. Things get complicated though when the FBI agent (Harrelson), who has been chasing them for years, shows up on their island accusing Brosnan of having plans to steal the last remaining Napoleon diamond which is, amazingly enough, scheduled to arrive within days. What follows is a fairly predictable though reasonable entertaining film that pits Brosnan between an obsessed FBI agent, a local Mobster (played by the always killer Chealde) trying to improve the lives of the native people, the woman Brosnan loves and happiness in retirement. Sound complicated? Well it’s not THAT bad.
The film is loaded with star power though, unfortunately, Brosnan and Harrelson seem to have more on screen chemistry than Brosnan and Hayek do. Despite all of these faults, After the Sunset somehow does manage to be an entertaining piece…as long as you don’t try and think to hard. You might want to save it for a rental if your DVD budget is limited.
