Blade: Trinity

Directed by: David S. Goyer
Starring: Wesley Snipes, Kris Kristofferson, Dominic Purcell and Jessica Biel

For some reason my wife LOVES the Blade movies. I kinda like them but nothing near like she and several other people I know seem to and I feel that the series peaked with the first film. It was with this semi-ambivalent attitude that I walked into the theater to see Blade: Trinity.

So far my favorite of the previous two films had been the first. Why? Because quite simply like so many others, I’m really getting sick of every vampire in every movie portrayed as pure euro trash. Now granted the first Blade had it’s fair share of euro trash vampires BUT Deacon Frost was totally hardcore…if maybe a little too into techno music. For the record, I do understand that “classic” vampires were mostly European aristocrat types but I think we’ve all had enough of that to last us a lifetime, and unfortunately David Goyer gave us another euro-vamp fest more like the second installment of the series than the much better, more hardcore first film.

The film starts in the Middle East where a team of heavily bundled troops explores what appears to be a tomb. There they find Drake who, big shock, is the vampire behind the Dracula legend and is the first ever vampire.

At this point I need to pause the review for a brief rant. Why is almost EVERY new vampire movie coming out these days about resurrecting/finding/mating with/whatever Dracula or the first vampire or most of the time both? Why? Are they at that much of a loss for ideas? OK, now that I have gotten that out of my system…

It seems that the modern day vampires just can’t deal with Blade so they need to bring Drake back cause he is the only powerful enough, blah, blah, blah. In addition they launch a negative PR campaign against Blade to make him public enemy number one. Basically the only thing that didn’t make me thoroughly dislike this movie was the delicious Jessica Biel(can anyone say Gear Magazine?) and the always hilarious Ryan Reynolds. Otherwise it just felt worn out and done before…but done much better. I simply think David Goyer bit off way more than he could chew in deciding to direct this installment instead of focusing all of his attention on the writing. Most definitely save this one for a rental.

UPDATE: Apparently even Wesley Snipes thinks Blade: Trinity sucks. He's now sueing New Line Cinema for $5,000,000 claiming among many other things that the director and cast were totally forced on him and he didn't have time to object before filming started. I think he's just mad because Ryan Renolds totally stole every scene he was in.
