Bubba
Ho-Tep
Directed

Starring: Bruce Campbell, Ossie Davis, Bob Ivy and
Ella Joyce
What could be a better idea for a movie than Bruce Campbell
playing Elvis in a nursing home in East Texas battling a mummy? I mean
come on, it's Bruce Campbell so it has to kick ass right? Well folks,
I can sum up "Bubba Ho-Tep" in one word and unfortunately that word
is disappointing. I love Bruce as EVERYONE should but this one just
was not up my alley. Maybe it's my fault that I didn't like it since
I admittedly was expecting something at least a little closer to an
"Evil Dead" film. Not that I wanted "Bubba Ho-Tep" to be "Evil Dead
4" or anything but I just expected a little of that style of over the
top humor, maybe some of that comic book action but "Bubba Ho-Tep" has
no real action at all and very little humor to speak of.
Most of the "jokes" were inner monologue by Bruce about the "crapper"
or his penile growth, and for the first 30 minutes Bruce never even
gets out of bed. Actually, I guess I can describe this movie with another
word…s-l-o-w. Even after Bruce finally gets out of bed, he keeps getting
right back in to take a nap. Luckily, you are served up some interesting
dream sequences to break up the half hour in bed time.
Ossie Davis as a black JFK was an interesting addition to the story
but unfortunately it wasn't enough to save my attention span(had to
watch it twice since I fell asleep the first time). The mummy was interesting
as it is the first time I have EVER seen an Egyptian mummy in cowboy
boots and hat but unfortunately he is only shown about three times in
the whole film. Basically, this movie will have a very select audience
with some real die-hard fans but I will just have to bow out of that
particular audience. My recommendation? Save this one for a rental only.
